What does photovoltaics on public buildings mean?
Public bodies have large, mostly unused roof areas: schools, gyms, town halls, depots. A photovoltaic system can be placed on these areas without the municipality buying it. You lease the roof, an operator builds and runs the system and pays a fixed rent for it.
The second route is the plant you own. Then the municipality commissions planning and construction, owns the plant and uses the electricity itself. Which route fits depends on the budget, on the electricity consumption in the building, and on how much operation the body wants to take on itself.
Buildings
Solar for municipalities, schools and administrative buildings
Almost any public building with sufficient roof area is suitable. What matters at each object:
Schools and day-care centres
Large roof, but almost no consumption during the summer holidays. That is exactly when the plant produces most. Leasing therefore often fits better here than an own plant on self-consumption.
Sports and multi-purpose halls
Usually a single flat roof, few obstructions, good area. The load capacity is decisive, especially on older hall roofs.
Town halls and administrative buildings
Consumption is on weekdays during the day, so it matches generation well. For listed buildings we clarify in advance what is permitted.
Municipal works and depots
Hall roofs plus a vehicle fleet. When electric vehicles are added, self-consumption rises significantly.
Fire and rescue stations
Continuous operation, an even load profile. The electricity generated is reliably used on site.
Wastewater plants and utility buildings
High, constant electricity consumption around the clock. Self-consumption pays off fastest here.

Roof check
We check the area, load capacity, condition of the waterproofing and the grid connection. Free of charge and without obligation.
Offer
You receive the plant size, yield forecast and lease offer in writing, in a form you can present to your leadership.
Decision
The body decides in the responsible committee. We supply the documents and answer questions from the finance department.
Contract and construction
Lease contract, then installation, grid connection and commissioning. We take on the operation.

Ownership

If your municipality wants to own the plant and use the electricity directly, we plan and build turnkey (EPC) and hand over the finished plant.

Electricity
Who owns the electricity from the roof?
With leasing, the plant is ours, the electricity is fed in or marketed, and the municipality receives the rent. With the plant you own, both are yours: the plant and the electricity. Then what counts is how much you consume in the building yourself. The more evenly consumption is spread across the day, the more self-consumption contributes.
You can also use the electricity directly on site. We supply it to your building at favourable rates, cheaper than grid power. This way you consume the energy where it is generated — on your own roof, without the detour through the grid. That lowers your electricity costs and helps the climate: every kilowatt-hour from the roof replaces power from fossil plants and saves CO2. An empty roof area becomes clean energy for a school, a sports hall or a town hall — generated and used in the same place.

Which public buildings are suitable?
In principle any building with a sufficiently load-bearing roof — from schools and sports halls to municipal depots. Whether a roof is suitable is clarified in advance in a review.
Does the municipality have to invest?
Not with the leasing model. You provide the roof area; we take on the investment and operation. You receive a predictable lease income.
Do we have to put this out to tender?
With roof leasing you are not procuring a plant, you are providing an area. Our standard route with the public sector is leasing — the simpler route for many bodies. We coordinate the appropriate framework together with you.
Do we need a committee decision?
As a rule yes, because a long-term lease contract is concluded. We supply the documents for the submission and answer questions from the administration.
Can we also own the plant ourselves?
Yes. If you want to become the owner, we build the plant turnkey (EPC) and hand it over finished — with operation on request.
What happens if the roof needs to be refurbished?
The lease contract governs this. How the removal and reinstallation of the modules is handled is set out in writing in advance.
How long does a lease run?
Such contracts are long-term, matching the service life of the plant. We define the specific term and conditions together with you.
What happens at the end of the lease term?
Removal or takeover — both are set out in the contract. So it is clear from the start what happens after the term ends.
From what roof area is it worthwhile?
As a guide, from around 500 m² or 100 kWp, preferably from 1,000 m². We check the exact suitability during the roof check. More on this on our roof leasing page.
